Our Mission
At the New England Green Crab Co, we are passionately committed to safeguarding the fragile ecosystem of the Gulf of Maine. Our mission is to combat the ecological threat posed by the invasive green crab species while working diligently to enhance the overall health and balance of this vital marine environment.
The Gulf of Maine is a place of unparalleled natural beauty and ecological significance. It’s home to diverse marine life, pristine coastlines, and vibrant communities that rely on the ocean’s resources for their livelihoods. However, the proliferation of invasive green crabs has posed a significant challenge to this delicate equilibrium. These aggressive creatures have disrupted local ecosystems, causing detrimental ripple effects on native species and, ultimately, on the people who depend on this ecosystem.
We at the Green Crab Co are on a journey to combat the green crab invasion, employing innovative strategies and sustainable practices to restore harmony to the Gulf of Maine. By controlling the green crab population, we aim to protect native species, restore marine biodiversity, and promote the resilience of the region’s fisheries.
Our dedicated team of scientists, conservationists, and passionate volunteers is at the forefront of this mission. We believe in the power of collaboration, community engagement, and scientific expertise to effect positive change. Through education, research, and sustainable management, we envision a future where the Gulf of Maine continues to thrive for generations to come.
Current Projects
In our quest to combat the invasive green crab population and rejuvenate the Gulf of Maine’s ecosystem, we are exploring innovative solutions that benefit both the environment and the local economy. Below are listed some of our current projects that aim to fulfil this mission.
1. Green Crabs as Bait
One of our current projects focuses on utilizing green crabs as bait. These voracious invaders have been a nuisance to native species, but they can also serve as a valuable resource for the fishing industry. By transforming green crabs into a sustainable and effective bait option, we aim to reduce their numbers while providing a practical solution to local fishermen.
2. Green Crabs as Compost
Turning an environmental challenge into an opportunity, we have embarked on a project that explores the potential of green crabs as compost. Green crabs, with their high calcium content, can be repurposed into nutrient-rich compost, which not only reduces waste but also enriches soil health. By diverting green crabs from landfills and converting them into a valuable resource for local agriculture and gardening, we contribute to a more sustainable and circular economy.
3. Green Crabs as Alternative Materials
Our commitment to environmental sustainability extends to finding alternative uses for green crabs beyond bait and compost. In this project, we are investigating the viability of green crab shells as a source of biodegradable materials. The chitin-rich shells of green crabs have the potential to replace plastics and other non-biodegradable materials in various applications. This innovative approach not only helps reduce plastic pollution but also addresses the green crab invasion problem at the same time.
4. Green Crabs as Food Product
Recognizing the importance of promoting sustainable seafood options, we are actively working on a project to transform green crabs into a delectable and nutritious food product. By developing culinary solutions, we hope to create a market for green crabs as a seafood source, potentially relieving pressure on overexploited native species. This project aligns with our mission to reduce the green crab population while offering a sustainable and locally sourced food option for consumers.
These projects represent our dedication to finding creative and ecologically responsible ways to address the green crab invasion while simultaneously contributing to the well-being of the Gulf of Maine’s ecosystems and communities.
